Fishing in Kerry

Fishing In Kerry

Posted: 24 February 2022

In Kerry, whether you are a seasoned angler or a novice, you will be spoiled for choice. Whether it's lake fishing, river fishing, sea fishing, or shore fishing, there's something for everyone. Because of the peninsula's unusual physical location, fishing and angling opportunities abound all around the Ring of Kerry.

The Ring of Kerry circumnavigates the Iveragh peninsula, which is Europe's westernmost landmass. The Wild Atlantic Ocean is just off its shores, and it is this that has given Kerry its world-famous salmon and trout fishing reputation. Kerry is the first place to look for wild Atlantic Salmon. The salmon and trout's second geographic criteria, a good spawning area with an abundance of fresh water, comes into play next. The MacGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland's highest mountain range, is nestled in the midst of the Iveragh peninsula, from whence flows a quantity of freshwater via the various rivers and streams that rise in the mountains. Nature has produced some fantastic lakes and fishing grounds along the route between mountain and sea.

River Laune -The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens

Alternatively, at our sister hotel, The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, cast a line for Brown Trout and Salmon in the River Laune, which runs through the estate. If you wish to fish at The Dunloe, you are welcome to use their fishing equipment free of charge. The kitchen will gladly prepare and cook your catch that evening for dinner. The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens may arrange for a ghillie to instruct and direct you to the most productive portions of the river, or you can simply spend a few hours alone, with only the sound of the flowing river to break the silence.

Lough Caragh - Ard na Sidhe Country House

Ard na Sidhe Country House is a nature lover's delight, and hotel guests are encouraged to take a leisurely boat ride on Caragh Lake or try their luck fishing. A complimentary fishing rod can also be provided. (On a first-come, first-served basis, this service is available.)

At an extra cost, our team at Ard na Sidhe may organise boating or fishing expeditions on Caragh Lake with a local guide (advance notice is required).

Licence & Permits

The state issues fishing licences, which essentially allow you to fish. Fishing for trout is free, but salmon requires a state rod licence.

Fishing licences are normally obtained locally and allow you to fish in a certain lake or river. There are licences available for juveniles, and worms and spinning rods are permitted. These fisheries' rules and restrictions are usually printed on the licences.
