Gap of Dunloe

Discover the Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is one of the most stunningly beautiful parts of County Kerry and indeed Ireland. Stretching through the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range, this beautiful glacial valley simply must be experienced to be appreciated. Situated at the entrance to the Gap, sits Kate Kearney's Cottage, a 150 year old family-run establishment. Its story begins with Kate Kearney herself, who lived in the years before the Great Famine of 1845. It was at Kate Kearney's Cottage that Kate distilled a particularly potent Poitin, called Kate Kearney's Mountain Dew, so strong that it could not be drunk without at least 7 times its own quantity in water! Illegal of course and no longer available, Kate Kearneys Cottage now features a bar, restaurant and craft shops.

Gap of Dunloe Tour

A tour of the Gap of Dunloe is a "must do" tour during your visit to Killarney. Guests of The Europe Hotel & Resort can be collected from the front door of the hotel for a memorable trip through "The Gap". The tour begins with a short coach journey to Kate Kearney's Cottage where you can take a jaunting car or go on horseback through the six mile pass. A packed lunch or BBQ (groups of 40 pax or more only) can be arranged at Lord Brandon's cottage upon request. Once through the gap, boats are waiting for the homeward journey via the enchanting Upper, Middle & Lower Lakes to historic Ross Castle where coaches await for the journey back to Killarney. Groups staying at The Europe Hotel & Resort, which are taking part in the Gap of Dunloe Tour, can, by prior arrangement, return by boat directly to the hotel's own pier.
